Triage: Assessing the Severity of Your Broken Tooth
Biting down on an unpopped popcorn kernel, an olive pit, or hard crusty bread is the classic trigger for a sudden weekend tooth fracture. When a tooth breaks, your immediate priority is determining whether the fracture is a minor aesthetic chip, an exposed dentin crack, or a catastrophic fracture exposing the dental nerve.
Take a clean mirror, use the flashlight on your smartphone, and inspect the damaged tooth. If the break is small and superficial with no sensitivity to air, the enamel alone has chipped. If the tooth exhibits a visible yellowish inner core and stings when breathing cool air or drinking water, dentin is exposed. If you observe a bright red or bleeding pinpoint speck in the exact center of the fractured tooth, the dental pulp is exposed and requires rapid clinical attention.
